Combined with unclean water, the lack of basic sanitation causes 2 million deaths a year and is a leading cause of child mortality from preventable diseases.

However, it is not just health that is affected by sanitation; it has a huge impact on the environment, poverty reduction and economic and social development.
In Africa, 5% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is lost due to illnesses and deaths caused by dirty waste and the absence of sanitation.

This is all not to mention the inexcusable indignity it causes through not having a hygienic, safe, private place to go to the toilet; a humiliation which is predictably shouldered by women more than men. Terrifyingly, the fact is that when finding a secluded place to relieve themselves; women are then left open to attack. Moreover, on reaching adolescence, girls abandon education due to inadequate sanitation facilities in schools.

The issue of 2.5 billion people around the world living without a toilet is a serious one, but to get people listening to the campaign, you need to make it interesting to them. We have found that the Give A Sh*it campaign does just that!

Plus, due to the lack of priority given to the sanitation sector, and the current poor investment rate in development, the Millennium Development Goal for sanitation will not be met until 2018 and this is just not good enough

Dear Chris and Team

The ‘Give a Sh*t’ (GAS) campaign is trying to tackle the taboo of the toilet. Yes, we want to get people talking about the issue of sanitation and talking about poo!

Sanitation is not an issue that we really like to talk about – let alone expect you to. But it’s an issue we HAVE to talk about because so many people die when we let our embarrassment get in the way. There are 2.5 billion people, to be precise, across the world who are living without a toilet!

The 19th November 2009 is World Toilet Day and we are asking you, the Radio 1 Chris Moyles' show to play our ‘Sh*t Song’ live on air, to ALL your listeners, to really show that it’s Not a Taboo, it’s just Poo!

So,  do you Give A Sh*t, Moyles?

Play the ‘Sh*t Song’ on World Toilet Day, 19th November
